How much paint do I need for a 18×20 room?
Short answer: a 18×20 room with 8-foot ceilings needs about 2.9 gallons of paint for two coats. With a 10% safety margin, buy 3 × 1-gallon can + 1 × quart.
A 18×20 room is usually a great room or large family room. The estimate below assumes 2 doors and 4 windows, which is typical for that size; adjust them in the calculator if yours differ.
How we got that number
- Wall area: 2 × (18 + 20) × 8 ft = 608 sq ft
- Minus 2 doors (20 sq ft each) and 4 windows (15 sq ft each) = 508 sq ft to paint
- Two coats at 350 sq ft per gallon = 2.90 gallons
- Plus a 10% safety margin for textured walls, patches, and touch-ups = 3.19 gallons
Can labels assume smooth, primed walls. Textured or rough walls use more paint, which is why we add 10%. Very rough surfaces like brick can need even more.
